Positions available
There are different positions available at different venues for the six week placement. Below is an example of the types of roles that volunteers get involved with.
Visitor Service Volunteer
Volunteers are often the first point of contact for museum visitors. The primary purpose of the role is to welcome visitors and ensure they have all the information they need for a successful visit.
Volunteers answer visitor queries, provide information about the museum and its displays, and promote any activities that are available. They offer practical advice about how to get the most out of a visit as well as offering directions facilities and other areas of the museum. Volunteers may also be asked to help out with craft sessions and special events.

Object Handling Volunteer
The purpose of the role is to engage visitors with real and replica objects from the museum handling collection. Volunteers demonstrate and talk to visitors of all ages and background about how an object was used, what its purpose was and who used it. Volunteers offer the visitor the opportunity to handle the item showing how to hold the object and encourage discussion.

Admin Volunteer
On occasions administrative roles supporting a department in the museum are offered to volunteers. If available it is likely to involve computer work, meeting and greeting people, answering queries working alongside existing team members.
